A:  If regular cleaning is not undertaken, fats, oils deposits and fibrous particles can accumulate in kitchen extract systems, reducing air flow efficiency and producing a warm greasy environment for bacteria and pests to breed.

Q: Why do I need to undertake Kitchen Extract Cleaning?

A: YES!! These areas, if not professionally maintained can quickly become a fire risk.  According to a study by the fire and security organisation IFEC, around a quarter of the estimated 24,000 accidental fires in non-domestic buildings each year are caused by cooking appliances.  DON 'T LET THIS BE YOU!!

Q: If not maintained, are we at risk of a fire?

Insurers may not always pay a claim if the duct system was found to be the cause of the fire spreading - especially if it could be demonstrated that the system was not properly cleaned or maintained.

It is the responsibility of the Building Manager to ensure that kitchen grease extract systems (canopies, filters, ductwork risers and fans) in all commercial kitchens are compliant - as required by the buildings insurance policy, in accordance with Fire Safety and Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations.
